Executive answer

What is an AI governance framework?

An AI governance framework is the set of rules, roles and controls that decide how an organization builds, buys and uses AI: who approves it, what it may do, how risk is measured, and how decisions are recorded. Good frameworks reach the system itself. If your framework only lives in a policy document, it governs nothing.

The frameworks most organizations start from

  • NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF): four functions: Govern, Map, Measure, Manage. Voluntary, widely used in the U.S.
  • ISO/IEC 42001: an AI management system standard you can be certified against.
  • EU AI Act: law, not guidance. Risk tiers with obligations for high-risk systems.

These tell you what to govern. None of them tells you how to stop a specific agent from acting on stale data next Tuesday. That part is yours.

The five controls every working framework needs

  1. Ownership: a named person accountable for each AI workflow.
  2. Authority: a written list of what each AI system may suggest, draft, do and approve.
  3. Evidence: the information behind each decision is current, traceable and strong enough for the stakes. That is Context-Verified Decision Intelligence.
  4. Review points: a person signs off before high-impact actions, and the sign-off is recorded first.
  5. Receipts: every run leaves a record, including 'nothing changed' and 'blocked', that someone other than the AI can check.

Where frameworks fail in practice

  • Written for chatbots, applied to agents that act.
  • Approved once, never re-checked as models and vendors change.
  • No record of what was stopped, so nobody knows whether the controls work.

What to do on Monday

Pick one AI workflow that can send, change or approve something. Write down its five controls. Every blank is your framework's real starting point.

Common questions

Do we need ISO 42001 certification?

Only if customers or regulators ask for it. Every organization needs the five controls.

Is the NIST AI RMF enough?

It's a strong map. It doesn't install anything in your systems.

How long does it take to stand up?

One workflow can be under real control in two weeks. That is the scope of the AI Trust Audit.
